その幅広い活動により、一言では説明出来ない多才なアーティスト。完璧な技術を持つ天才ピアニストとして世界を極めたプレトニョフは指揮者や作曲家としても魔法のような驚くべき才能に恵まれ、現在はピアニストとしての活動を休み指揮活動に専念している。ロシア・ナショナル管弦楽団創設者・芸術監督。2008年9月よりスイス・イタリア語放送管弦楽団首席客演指揮者も務め、ボリショイ・オペラでの「スペードの女王」指揮は大成功を収めている。

1957年ロシアのアルハンゲリスク生まれ。13歳で中央音楽院、1974年モスクワ音楽院に入学。

ゴルバチョフ元大統領と親交を深めたプレトニョフは、ロシアで国家から独立したオーケストラを設立するという偉業を成し遂げ1990年ロシア・ナショナル管弦楽団（RNO）を設立。

指揮者として東京フィルハーモニー交響楽団には2003年7月初めて客演。以来毎年共演を行なっている。

1995年イェリツィン前大統領および2002年プーチン前大統領によってロシア共和国第一等国家賞を授与されている。

Mikhail Pletnev is an artist who cannot be classified in one word. After being known as a genius and one of the greatest pianists of our time, Pletnev is now concentrating into activities of conducting and composing. Born in Archangel, Russia in 1957. Studied at the Central School of Music from the age of 13 and entered the Moscow Conservatory in1974.

The resulting friendship with Gorbachev gave Pletnev the historical opportunity to realize his dream of forming an orchestra independent from the government. Attracted by Pletnev's artistry and vision, the finest musicians in Russia joined him in launching the Russian National Orchestra in 1990. Under his artistic leadership as Founder and Artistic Director, the RNO, in less than a decade, has become to be known as one of the world's leading orchestras. Starting from September 2008, he is serving as the first guest conductor of the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Switzerland, too.

His stature in Russia was formally recognized in 1995 when he was awarded the First State Prize of the Russian Federation by President Yeltsin an honour, that was again bestowed on him in 2002 by President Putin.
