1957年生まれ。桐朋学園大学に学ぶ。鈴木共子、江藤俊哉の各氏に師事。J. イスナール、G. ブイヨン各氏の指導を受ける。新星日本交響楽団、東京交響楽団のコンサートマスターを歴任し、現在は東京フィルハーモニー交響楽団のソロ・コンサートマスターを務める。92年モルゴーア・クァルテット結成に参画。ショスタコーヴィチの弦楽四重奏曲全15曲に取り組み注目を浴びる。ソリストとしての活動も活発に行い、J. S. バッハ、ベートーヴェンからリゲティ、グバイドゥーリナに至る協奏曲の幅広いレパートリーを井上道義、大野和士、J. コヴァーチュ、R. バルシャイ、チョン・ミョンフンなどの名匠と共演している。05年にはV. フェドセーエフに招かれ、モスクワにてモスクワ放送チャイコフスキー記念交響楽団と共演している。08年5月、ライフ・ワークであるバッハの《無伴奏ヴァイオリンのためのソナタとパルティータ》全曲演奏会を成し遂げ、大きな注目を浴びた。

Born in 1957, Eiji Arai studied at the Toho Gakuen School of Music under Kyoko Suzuki and Toshiya Eto. He also studied under J. Isnard and G. Bouillon. His role as concertmaster began in 1979 with the Japan Shinsei Symphony Orchestra, and continued with the Tokyo Symphony from 1980 until he joined the Tokyo Philharmonic in 1989, where he is solo concertmaster. In 1992, Arai and his friends founded the Morgaua Quartet, which quickly gained stature for mastering a wide repertoire ranging from all 15 string quartets of Shostakovich to powerful arrangements of rock music. Vigorously active as a soloist, Arai has collaborated with Kazuyoshi Akiyama, Kazushi Ono, Rudolf Barshai, J?nos Kov?cs, Michiyoshi Inoue, and Myung-Whun Chung in numerous concerto performances from J. S. Bach to Shostakovich, Gubaidulina and Ligeti.
In 2005, Arai was invited to Moscow by Vladimir Fedoseyev to perform concertos of Prokofiev and Yuzo Toyama with the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio. In 2008, Arai attracted critical acclaim for his performance of the complete Bach Sonatas and Partitas.
