Audition Information

FLUTE AUDITION

The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra welcomes all interested & talented musicians to audition for the position of Principal Flute.

OPENING:

One Principal Flute Player

QUALIFICATION:

Excellent music skills and good health are required to perform as a regular member in the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.
The candidate is requested to start working for the Orchestra by December 1, 2024.
(The starting date is negotiable.)
Applicants will be selected regardless of their age and nationality.

Applications must be received without fail by 6 p.m., July 31, 2024, Wednesday.
We will not accept applications by regular mail.
The Email subject should be: Flute Audition.

Required information
Please provide the following info by E-Mail:
(1) Your name
(2) Date of birth
(3) Your contact address, phone number, & Email address
(4) Your educational/music background
(5) Your professional experience (your experiences as a guest player for orchestras, received awards, etc.)
(6) URL of the YouTube visual recording of your performance for the video audition.
(7) The dates (among the choices below) that you will not be available for the first live audition.

 

AUDITION SCHEDULE:

1) Screening & video audition
The URL of your performance video must be submitted with the application.
Video for the video screening should be uploaded on YouTube as “limited public access.”
The screening results will be notified by August 7, Wednesday, 2024.
If you do not receive the results within a few days, please inquire at the contact points below.

Assigned works for the performance video
(1) Mozart: Flute Concerto in G major, K. 313, bars 27-149 of the 1st movement, bars 9-37 of the 2nd movement (It should be record with piano accompaniment.) 

(2) Composition of your choice, unaccompanied or with piano accompaniment.
Any movement of a work, or a movement partially cut may be accepted.
The recording does not necessarily have to be a new recording for this audition, as long as it is made after January 2023.

Instruction on the performance video
-The recording should be of the performance of the pieces only. No voice explanation is required for the performer’s name or the name of the pieces.
-The accompaniment should be played by piano.
-The video of each movement should be recorded separately, uploaded, and three URLs for each movement should be attached to the email.
-The video must be shot from the front so that the entire instrument, face, and hands can be seen.
-When uploading the video to YouTube, it must be made as "limited public access.”
-The account for posting the video does not have to be the candidate's.

2) First live audition
Successful applicants of the video audition will be invited to the first live audition.
Date: August 22, Thu (after evening), 23, Fri (after evening) & 28, Wed (all day), 2024
Venue: Tokyo Opera City
Assigned Works:
-The same work assigned as (1) for the video audition (with piano accompaniment)
-Orchestral Study (Successful applicants of the video audition will be informed by Email of the titles and the parts of the work to perform.)

3) Second live audition
Successful applicants of the first video audition will be invited to the second live audition.
Date: November 11, Monday, 2024 (After evening)
Venue: Tokyo Opera City
Assigned Works:
-The same work assigned as (1) for the video audition (with piano accompaniment)
-Orchestral Study: the same as the first live audition.
-Composition of your choice, unaccompanied or with piano accompaniment.
It does not have to be the same as the work you performed for the video audition.
(We may ask you to shorten the work due to our time limit.)

NOTES:

Trial period: The successful applicant will be given an 11 months trial Trial period: The successful applicant will be given an 11 months trial period with the Orchestra before the final decision about an official position is made.

Terms and Conditions will be determined based on the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra’s regulations.

Accompanist: Applicants are expected to bring her/his own piano accompanist.

The orchestra will not answer inquiries about the content of the screening/audition.

Applicants are responsible for all costs (e.g. traveling, etc.) pertaining to the audition.

OBOE AUDITION

QUALIFICATION:

Excellent music skills and good health are required to perform as a regular member in the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.
The candidate is requested to start working for the Orchestra by April 1, 2025.
(The starting date is negotiable.)
Applicants will be selected regardless of their age and nationality.

(from any publisher, with piano accompaniment) 

(2) Orchestral Study (All the music is ORCHESTER PROBESPIEL, Edition Peters)
   ・p.10 Brahms: Sinfonie Nr.1 2.Satz (Bar Numbers 17~43)
   ・pp.18-19 Ravel: Le Tombeau de Couperin
   ・p.36 Verdi: Rigoletto 2.Akt

2) First live audition
Successful applicants of the video audition will be invited to the first live audition.
Date: Monday 7 & Tuesday 8, October, 2024 
Venue: Tokyo Opera City
Assigned Works:
-Solo work: W.A. Mozart Oboe Concerto C-Dur (with piano accompaniment)
-Orchestral Study (Successful applicants of the video audition will be informed by Email of the titles and the parts of the work to perform.)

Exact time & date to be decided and applicants will be informed accordingly from the above two days. In case you are not available on one of the dates, clearly write so in your document.

3) Second live audition
Successful applicants of the first video audition will be invited to the second live audition.
Date: Tuesday 15, October, 2024
Venue: Bunkamura Orchard Hall
Assigned Works:
-Solo work: W.A. Mozart Oboe Concerto C-Dur (with piano accompaniment)
-Orchestral Study: We will notify successful applicants of the First Live Audition.
