Audition Information

VIOLIN VORSPIELER AUDITION

The Tokyo Philharmonic welcomes all interested and talented musicians to audition for the positions of Violin Vorspieler.

OPENING:

Violin Vorspieler: 2 positions

QUALIFICATION:

Excellent music skills and good health are required to perform all duties as a regular member of the Tokyo Philharmonic.

The candidate is requested to start working for the Orchestra by November 1, 2026.
(The starting date is negotiable.)

Applicants will be considered regardless of age or nationality.

Multiple applications, including for the Violin Tutti position, the audition for which will take place in July 2026, are acceptable. Please indicate in your application if you are also applying for the Violin Tutti position. (It is not necessary to prepare or submit separate applications for the Violin Vorspieler and Violin Tutti positions.)

Applications must be received without fail by 6 p.m., on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

Required Information
Please include the following information in your email:

(1) Full name;
(2) Date of birth;
(3) Contact information (contact address, phone number, and e-mail address);
(4) Educational background and musical training;
(5) Professional experience (including orchestral engagements as a guest player, awards received, etc.); and
(6) An URL of the YouTube video recording submitted for the video audition.
*The information listed in items (1), (4) and (5) must also be included in the YouTube video description. Please refer to the “Instructions for the Performance Video” under the AUDITION SCHEDULE section.

 

AUDITION SCHEDULE:

1) Screening & Video Audition
・Applicants must submit the URL of their performance video together with the application.
・The performance video must be uploaded to YouTube with “Unlisted” visibility.
・The screening results will be notified by Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
・If you do not receive the results within a few days after this date, please contact us at the email address listed below.

Assigned Repertoire for the Video Audition
- Bach: Prelude from Partita No. 3, BWV 1006
- Mozart: First movement from one of the following Violin Concertos: No. 3, No. 4, or No. 5. Please choose one concerto and perform the first movement with cadenza. Any edition may be used. The concerto must be performed with piano accompaniment.

Instructions for the Performance Video
- The video must be filmed from the front or at a slight angle, clearly showing the performer’s face, the entire instrument, and both hands.
- The information listed in items (1), (4) and (5) under “Required Information” in the APPLICATION section must also be included in the YouTube video description.
- Piano accompaniment is required.
- Bach and Mozart must be recorded consecutively in a single, unedited video, in that order (Bach followed by Mozart).
- The URL of the uploaded YouTube video must be clearly indicated in the email. Please ensure that the link is accessible.
- The recording should contain performance only. Verbal announcements of the performer’s name or the titles of the pieces are not required.
- The YouTube account used for uploading the videos does not need to belong to the applicant.
- The video must be uploaded to YouTube as “Unlisted.”
- A simple recording environment or basic equipment is acceptable. The recording environment or equipment will not affect the evaluation.

2) First Live Audition
(With piano accompaniment. Candidates must bring their own piano accompanist.)

Candidates who successfully pass the video audition will be invited to the first live audition.

- Bach: Prelude from Partita No. 3 in E major, BWV 1006
- Mozart: First movement of the Violin Concerto performed for the video audition (including cadenza). Any edition may be used.

3) Second Live Audition
(With piano accompaniment. Candidates must bring their own piano accompanist.)

Candidates who successfully pass the first live audition will be invited to the second live audition.

- Mozart: First movement of the Violin Concerto performed for the video audition (including cadenza). Any edition may be used.
- First movement of a violin concerto from the Romantic era (including cadenza, if applicable). Any edition may be used.
- Orchestral excerpts (details of the repertoire and required excerpts will be sent by email to candidates who pass the first live audition)

・The successful candidate will be appointed subject to a trial period of up to 11 months. After this period, the candidate will be assigned to either the First or Second Violin section, and permanent employment will be confirmed.
・Salary and other terms and conditions of employment will be determined in accordance with the Tokyo Philharmonic’s regulations.
・The Orchestra will not respond to inquiries regarding the content or results of the screening or auditions.
・All expenses related to the audition process (including travel expenses) must be borne by the applicant.

(The starting date is negotiable.)

Applicants will be considered regardless of age or nationality.

Multiple applications, including for the Violin Vorspieler position, the audition for which will take place in June 2026, are acceptable. Please indicate in your application if you are also applying for the Violin Vorspieler position. (It is not necessary to prepare or submit separate applications for the Violin Tutti and Violin Vorspieler positions.)

FLUTE AUDITION

The Tokyo Philharmonic welcomes all interested and talented musicians to audition for the positions of Second Flute.

OPENING:

Second Flute (doubling Piccolo): 2 positions

QUALIFICATION:

Excellent music skills and good health are required to perform all duties as a regular member of the Tokyo Philharmonic.

The candidate is requested to start working for the Orchestra by July 1, 2026.
(The starting date is negotiable.)

Applicants will be considered regardless of age or nationality.

Multiple applications, including for the Principal Flute position, for which the application deadline is in March 2026, are acceptable. Please indicate in your application if you are also applying for the Principal Flute position. (It is not necessary to prepare or submit separate applications for the Principal Flute and Second Flute positions.)

1. Mozart: Flute Concerto in G major, K. 313
- First movement, bars 27—149
- Second movement, bars 9—37

2. Vivaldi: Flautino Concerto in C major, RV443
- Second movement (Repeats and ornamentation are optional.)

Instructions for the Performance Video
・The recording should contain performance only. Verbal announcements of the performer’s name or the titles of the pieces are not required.
・Each movement must be recorded as a separate video, uploaded individually, and two URLs should be clearly indicated in the application email.
・The video must be filmed from the front, clearly showing the entire instrument, the performer’s face, and hands.
・Videos must be uploaded to YouTube as “Unlisted.”
・The YouTube account used for uploading the videos does not need to belong to the applicant.

2) First Live Audition
Candidates who successfully pass the video audition will be invited to the first live audition.

- Orchestral study (details will be sent by email to successful candidates)

3) Second Live Audition
Candidates who successfully pass the first live audition will be invited to the second live audition.

Repertoire:
- The same assigned repertoire as for the video audition (with piano accompaniment)
- The same orchestral study as in the first live audition
