CLARINET AUDITION

The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra welcomes all interested & talented musicians to audition for the position of Principal Clarinet.

OPENING:

Principal clarinet players, a few positions available

QUALIFICATION:

Excellent music skills and good health are required to perform as a regular member in the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.
The candidate is requested to start working for the Orchestra by 1st, April 2025. (The starting date is negotiable.)
Applicants will be selected regardless of their age and nationality.

How to apply:
Please send a ready-made Rirekisho (Japanese CV form) or A4 or letter sized paper with your photo attached, including the following information 1. to 8. below. Your application will be considered complete upon receipt.

Required application documents and materials:

(2) Date of birth
(3) Your Nationality
(4) Your Contact Address/Phone Number/Fax Number/E-mail address
(5) Your educational/music background
(6) Your professional experience
(7) A photo of your bust shot without a hat, taken within 3 months, in 3x4 cm in color.
(8) URL of the YouTube visual recording of your performance for the video audition

AUDITION SCHEDULE:

1) Screening & video audition
-In the application document, write down the URL of the video of your performance of the Assigned Works below. (Please upload it to YouTube as “unlisted.”)
-After consideration and screening of the documents & video submitted, we will send the result by email by Monday, 7th October, 2024. In case you do not receive it, please contact our office.

Assigned works for the performance video
1) Mozart: Clarinet Concerto, the 1st movement, bars 49-127
2) Orchestral study
-Beethoven: Symphony No.6 Pastorale (excerpt)
-Verdi: Opera La Forza del Destino, “Sinfonia” (excerpt)
-Puccini: Opera Tosca (excerpt)
-Shostakovich: Symphony No.9 (excerpt)

NB: 1) Mozart’s work should be performed & recorded with piano accompaniment.
NB: Regarding the designated sections of the assigned works for the video screening, please email us at Cl2024@tpo.or.jp with the subject line “Request for assigned works for video screening - Tokyo Philharmonic Clarinet Audition”

Instruction on the video data
-The recording should be of the performance of the pieces only. No voice explanation is required for the performer’s name or the name of the pieces.
-The video must be recorded in the same order as above at one time without stopping the recorder through the five pieces. No editing of the recording is accepted.
-Separate recordings for the concerto and the orchestral study are allowed.
-The video must be shot from the front so that the entire instrument, face, and hands can be seen. Do not use the automatic audio volume adjustment function.
-Upload the video to YouTube as “unlisted.”

2) First Live Audition
Date: Friday, October 18th (morning till noon), Saturday, October 19th (evening till night), and Wednesday, October 30th (evening till night), 2024
Place: Tokyo Opera City
Assigned Works: We will notify the successful participants of the video audition.
NB: Either the 18th or the 19th, and the 30th.
(The 30th will be separately notified based on the audition on the 18th or 19th.)

3) Second Live Audition
Date: Thursday 31th, October, 2024
Place: Tokyo Opera City
Assigned Works: We will notify successful applicants of the First Live Audition.

NOTES:

Applicants are in principle required to bring their own piano accompanist for the live audition.

Trial period: The successful applicant will be given an 11-month trial period with the Orchestra before a final decision about an official position is made.

Terms and Conditions will be determined, based on the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra’s regulations.

The orchestra will not return any documents and materials submitted by Applicants.
NB: Please refer to the privacy policy section of our website.
The orchestra will not answer inquiries on the content of the screening/audition.

Applicants are responsible for all costs (e.g. traveling, etc.) pertaining to the audition.
