Audition Information

ASSISTANT CONCERTMASTER

The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra welcomes all interested & talented musicians to audition for the position of Assistant Concertmaster.

OPENING:

One Assistant Concertmaster

QUALIFICATION:

Excellent music skills and good health are required to perform as a regular member in the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.
The timing of employment will be determined in consultation with the successful candidate.
Applicants will be selected regardless of their age and nationality.

APPLICATION:

 

Applications must be received without fail by 18:00, Monday 15th, April, 2024.
Turn in a ready-made Rirekisho (Japanese CV form) or A4 size (or letter size) paper with the following information and your photo attached.

Required Application Documents and Materials:
1) Your name
2) Date of birth
3) Your Nationality
4) Your Contact Address/Phone Number/Fax Number/E-mail address
5) Your educational/music background
6) Your professional experience
7) A photo of your bust shot without a hat, taken within 3 months, in 3 X 4 cm in color.
8) Your choice of assigned works to perform (See Assigned Works for the video audition below.)
9) URL of the YouTube visual recording of your performance for the video audition

 

AUDITION SCHEDULE:

Screening & Video audition
The following items must be submitted along with the application documents listed in the Required Application Documents and Materials above.

-Letter of recommendation (any format is acceptable)
-Video clips (uploaded to YouTube as "limited public access" and enter the URL in the application form)

Assigned Works for the video audition:
J.S.Bach: Fugue from Sonata for Solo Violin
W.A.Mozart: any first movement from Violin Concerto No.3, 4, 5 (with cadenza)
R. Wagner: from Overture to the Opera "Tannhäuser
 The 2nd solo part of the 2 soli violins from bars 205 to 220
(assistant part, the 3rd row of the part sheet music)

About the video
-The video must be recorded continuously and must not be edited or manipulated.
-Concertos must be performed and recorded with piano accompaniment.
-The video must be shot at a distance that the applicant can be recognized, in landscape mode, and at an angle that shows the contestant's entire body, right and left hands.
-When uploading the video to YouTube, please provide the URL as "limited public access" in the application form.

-After consideration and screening of the documents & video submitted, we will send the result by email by Tuesday 30th, April, 2024. In case you do not receive it, please contact our office.

First Live Audition
Date: To be decided after consultation with successful applicants of the First Live Audition.
Place: Tokyo Opera City (tbc)
Assigned Works:
1) Violin concerto, any one of the following (1st movement only, with preferred cadenza): L.v.Beethoven, J.Brahms, F.Mendelssohn, J.Sibelius, R.Schumann
2) Fugue from Bach's Sonata for Solo Violin (the same as the Video Audition)
3) Orchestral Study

Second Live Audition
Date: To be decided after consultation with successful applicants of the First Live Audition
Place: Tokyo Opera City (tbc)
Assigned Works:
1) Mozart’s Concerto which you performed for the Video Audition (1st movement only, with preferred cadenza).
2) The same concerto you performed for the First Live Audition.
3) Orchestral study
4) String ensemble audition

NOTES:

Accompanist: Applicants are expected to bring her/his own piano accompanist for the live auditions. If you would like us to refer to an accompanist, please let us know.

Trial period: The successful applicant will be given an 11 month trial period with the Orchestra before a final decision about an official position is made.

Terms and Conditions will be determined, based on the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra’s regulations.

The orchestra will not return any documents and materials submitted by Applicants.
NB: Please refer to the privacy policy section of our website.

The orchestra will not answer inquiries on the content of the screening/audition.

Applicants are responsible for all costs (e.g. traveling, etc.) pertaining to the audition.

FLUTE AUDITION

The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra welcomes all interested & talented musicians to audition for the position of Second Flute (& Piccolo).

OPENING:

Second Flute & Piccolo Player (1 player)

QUALIFICATION:

EExcellent music skills and good health are required to perform as a regular member in the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.
The candidate is requested to start working for the Orchestra by July 1, 2024.
(The starting date is negotiable.)
Applicants will be selected regardless of their age and nationality.

APPLICATION:

Applications must be received without fail by 6 p.m., March 22, 2024, Friday.
Applications will be accepted only by E-Mail.
The E-Mail subject should be: Flute Audition.

Required information
Please provide the following info by E-Mail:

(4) Your educational/music background
(5) Your professional experience (your experiences as a guest player for orchestras, received awards, etc.)
(6) URL of the YouTube visual recording of your performance for the video audition.

 

AUDITION SCHEDULE:

1) Screening & video audition
The URL of your performance video must be submitted with the application.
Videos of candidates who did not pass the profile screening may not be auditioned.
Video for video screening should be uploaded on YouTube as “limited public access.”
The screening results will be notified by Monday, March 25, 2024.
If you do not receive the results within a few days, please inquire at the contact points below.

Assigned works for the performance video
(Record all with piano accompaniment.) 
(1) Mozart: Flute Concerto in G major, K. 313, bars 27-149 of the 1st movement, bars 9-37 of the 2nd movement,
(2) Mozart: Flute Concerto in D major, K. 314, bars 7 to 50 of the 2nd movement (to be performed on piccolo)

Instruction on the video data
-The recording should be of the performance of the pieces only. No voice explanation is required for the performer’s name or the name of the pieces.

-The video of each movement should be recorded separately, uploaded, and three URLs for each movement should be attached to the email.

-The video must be shot from the front so that the entire instrument, face, and hands can be seen.

-When uploading the video to YouTube, it must be made as "limited public access.”

-The account for posting the video does not have to be the candidate's.

2) First live audition
Successful applicants of the video audition will be invited to the first live audition.
Date: March 29, Friday, 2024 (The date is negotiable.)
Place: Tokyo Opera City
Assigned Works: Successful applicants of the video audition will be informed of the titles to perform.

3) Second live audition
Successful applicants of the first video audition will be invited to the second live audition.
Date: April 10, Wednesday, 2024 (The date is negotiable.)
Place: Tokyo Opera City
Assigned Works: Successful applicants of the first live audition will be informed of the titles to perform.
