Audition Information

Viola Vorspieler

OPENING:

Viola Players (a few players for the Vorspieler position)
Note: It is possible to apply for the Tutti player audition to be held in August and September, 2022, along with this Vorspieler audition.

QUALIFICATION:

Excellent music skills and good health are required to perform as a regular member in the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. The candidate is requested to be available to start working for the Philharmonic by January 1, 2023. This date, however, is negotiable.
Applicants will be selected regardless of their age and nationality.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:

 

Applications must be received without fail by 6 p.m., August 5, 2022, Friday. Please send all necessary application documents stated below to:

SCREENING:

Required Application Documents and Materials:
Turn in a Rirekisho (Japanese CV form) or A4 size (or letter size) paper with the following information and your photo attached.

1. Your name
2. Date of birth
3. Your nationality
4. Your contact address, phone number, fax number, e-mail address
5. Your educational/music background
6. Your professional experience
7. A color photo of your bust shot without a hat, taken within 3 months, in 3 X 4 cm
8. The concerti & their editions that you are going to perform (See “Assigned Works” below.)
9. Position you are applying for. (Vorspieler only or both Vorspieler & Tutti)
Note: In case you are applying for both Vorspieler and Tutti auditions, please note it clearly. It is not necessary for you to turn in two sets of application documents.


In addition to the above document, turn in one or more of the following item:
-Video of your performance of the Assigned Works below (Please upload it to YouTube as “unlisted” and write down the URL in the application document.)*

-Audio recording of your performance of the Assigned Works below (Please use an online storage service and write down the URL in the application document.)*

-Recommendation letter (in any form)

*About the video and recording:
-The concerto and orchestral study must be performed in succession.
-No cut-and-paste, sound effects, or other editing should be done.
-The video must be shot at a distance that shows almost the entire body, at an angle that shows the right and left hands, and in landscape mode.
-When uploading the video to YouTube, please set the file as “unlisted” and write down the URL in the application document.

Assigned Works:

1) Select one from
Stamitz: Viola Concerto, D major, the exposition part of the 1st movement
or
Hoffmeister: Viola Concerto, D major, the exposition part of the 1st movement

2) Select one from
Bartok: Viola Concerto, the 1st movement (measures 1-161)
or
Walton:Viola Concerto, the 1st movement (measures 1-108)

3) Orchestral studies:
-Beethoven: Symphony No. 5, the 2nd movement (measures 1-10)
-Richard Staruss: Symphonic Poem “Don Juan” (measures 1-36)
-Mozart: Symphony No. 40, the 4th movement (measures 146-205)

Notes: Please specify one concerto from the above option 1) and 2) each (in total two concerti), and their editions of your choice in your application form.

AUDITION SCHEDULE:

Applications must be received without fail by 6 p.m., August 5, 2022, Friday.
E-Mail Applications will be accepted for processing.
After consideration and screening of the documents submitted, we will send out the result by postal mail on August 15, 2022, Monday. In case you do not receive it in a few days after August 15, please contact our office.

First Live Audition
Date:September 13, Tuesday or 14, Wednesday, 2022

Place: Tokyo Opera City
Assigned work:
- The same concerti you selected for the screening. (with piano accompaniment)
-We will notify the orchestra study assignments of successful candidates.

Second Live Audition
Date: September 15, Thursday, or 16, Friday, or 19, Monday, 2022

Place: Tokyo Opera City
Assigned work:
- The same concerti and the same orchestral studies for the First Live Audition (with piano accompaniment).

NOTES:

Accompanist: Applicants are expected to bring their own piano accompanist for the live auditions.

In case you have any problem within the above schedule for the Live Auditions, describe your issue in your application.

Trial period: The successful applicant will be given an 11 month trial period at maximum with the Orchestra before a final decision about an official position is made.

Terms and Conditions will be determined based on the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra’s policies.

The orchestra will not return any documents and materials submitted by applicants.

Tokyo Philharmonic will not answer inquiries about the content of the screening/audition.

Applicants are responsible for all costs (e.g. traveling, etc.) pertaining to the audition.

We will send messages to you from our email account audition@tpo.or.jp. Please make sure to set your account so that it can receive messages from ours without problems.
