TPO Honorary Music Director, Mo. Chung to be awarded the Italy National Contribution Medal

Maestro Myung-Whun Chung

Maestro Myung-Whun Chung will be awarded the Italy National Contribution Medal (Official Title : Commendatore Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana) from Mr. Sergio Mattarella, the President of Italy.

The medal was established in 1951 with the purpose of praising individuals who contribute to friendly and cooperative relationship between Italy and foreign countries through activities in various areas. Maestro Chung is recognized as the person who has contributed to development of culture and art in Italy and international exchanges in the world.

The medal is comparable to Légion d'Honneur, the authoritative medal awarded by French Government. Maestro Chung was already awarded ‘Officier’, ‘Chevalier’ and ‘Commandeur’ of Légion d'Honneur and gained honor of winning all the classes of French culture and art award in result.

Italian people love Maestro Chung as much as French people. For last decades, he has conducted many leading orchestras in Italy such as La Scala Philharmonic Orchestra, Santa Cecilia Orchestra of Rome, Teatro La Fenice Orchestra and so on. He has enhanced the reputation of Italy through music.

Maestro Chung was awarded Arturo Toscanini prize in 1989. And he was awarded ‘Premio della critica musicale Franco Abbiati’, the prize of Italian Music Critic Association two times in 1988 and 2015. He was awarded ‘Una vita nella musica Award’ from Teatro La Fenice praising his contribution to promotion of culture development in Venice and was awarded ‘The Key of Venice’ with being honorary citizen of Venice. He came into the spotlight because he conducted the La Scala Philharmonic Orchestra at the special concert for G7 summit in Taormina, Sicily on May 26th 2017.

That demonstrates how much this country that produced many eminent conductors loves and trusts him. Maestro Chung told that he felt greatly honored for being awarded the medal and would try his best to improve cultural exchanges between Italy and Korea.

The ceremony of medal award will be held on July 6th in the embassy of the Italian Republic in Korea. Mr. Maro della Seta, the Italian ambassador will award the medal on behalf of the Italian President.
